This was a mini project I worked on to practice my typography. The film I chose for this poster project was Belladonna of Sadness. A horror film from 1973. The synopsis sets in medieval France and it follows a woman named Jeanne, who makes a deal with the devil to enact revenge on those who abused her on her wedding day. Thus costing her immortality and happiness.
A film that showcases artistic visuals to evoke the main characters hallucinations that she witnesses.
I first started out with mapping out a moodboard that are inspired from the films themes and imagery, putting ideas together on how I can make a movie poster that uses those aspects.
After that I moved onto creating a custom typeface, I first wrote it out on paper using a ruler to help out with measurements. Making a semi cursive font to give it that french inspired element. Finalizing it by making it on Illustrator.
Moving onto the major part, creating the poster portion. I decided to keep it simple but emphasizing on the main character that story is focused on, Jeanne. Initially I was going to just make a poster with monsters surrounding a rose, symbolizing Jeanne's innocence. But I decided to just keep it simple this time. The sketch was done on iPad using the application, IbisPaint X.
I made 2 poster variations. The 2nd one originally had a demon hold onto the arm, but I decided to remove it as I felt like it looked a little too cluttered. Overall I really enjoyed creating the typeface and sketching the poster in the first variation. This was a fun project for me to test out my typography and art.
